Description

On the Arpaçay side of Lake Çıldır, these quiet shores offer one of Eastern Anatolia’s most impressive natural landscapes, changing character with the seasons and local life.

Story

The Kars side of Lake Çıldır, stretching along the Arpaçay shore with its quiet coves, wide reed beds and endless steppe views, is one of Eastern Anatolia’s most special stops for travellers seeking solitude in nature. Lying at an altitude of about 1,950 meters, the lake is shaped by harsh winters and cool summers. This elevation makes the water’s colour and the air’s clarity stand out; especially in the early morning, the lake surface reflects the surrounding hills like a mirror. On the Kars side, daily life in the villages near the shore is deeply intertwined with the lake. In summer you can see people going out to fish in small boats, while in winter they drink tea at tables set directly on the thick ice. The lake almost completely freezes during the coldest months, and this period is symbolised by horse-drawn sleigh rides. Visitors arriving from Kars experience a unique sensation as they glide over the ice on wide white plains, hearing the faint cracking sounds beneath the runners. In spring and summer, the lake reveals a completely different face. As the snow melts, the water level rises, yellow and purple flowers bloom along the shore, and the reed beds come alive with birdsong. For birdwatchers, Lake Çıldır is an important spot thanks to wild ducks, gulls and various species stopping by during migration. At sunset, red and orange tones spread along the horizon and reflect on the water; this moment is the most anticipated time of day for photography enthusiasts. Historically, the Kars side of Lake Çıldır lies close to regional trade routes. Although old caravan paths did not pass directly along the shore, traces of frontier life can still be felt in the culture of surrounding villages. The proximity to the Georgian border has left small marks on language and cuisine; fish dishes served around the lake, especially carp and trout, are prepared with local spices. Today, the lake has become an important example of rural tourism in Modern Turkey. The road from Kars city centre towards Arpaçay surprises visitors with this large body of water suddenly appearing in the middle of the steppe. Around the lake there are a few small facilities, tea gardens and fish restaurants, yet the area has largely preserved its natural, tranquil character. For those arriving from crowded cities, a few hours spent on the Kars shore of Lake Çıldır remain unforgettable as a combination of silence, a wide horizon and a cool breeze.
