Story

Lake Kuyucuk and the Kuyucuk Bird Sanctuary emerge about 40 kilometers northwest of the center of Kars, like a sudden patch of clear water in the middle of the steppe. Lying at roughly 1,600 meters above sea level, the lake is one of the key stopover points on the migration route between the Caucasus and Anatolia. When the snow melts in spring and the plateaus turn green, flocks of birds appear over the lake like fine lines drawn across the sky; in autumn the same flocks reappear, this time hurrying quietly south. Although it is a natural lake, its protection as a bird sanctuary and its systematic scientific monitoring date back to the period of Modern Turkey. National and international birdwatchers have long used Kuyucuk as an open-air laboratory to study migration patterns, waterbird populations, and the impacts of climate change. The number of bird species recorded here during the year exceeds 200; ruddy shelducks, coots, white-headed ducks, cranes, pelicans, and various raptors are just a few examples. On a quiet morning sitting by the shore, the distant calls of cranes blend with the melodies of small songbirds hidden in the reeds. The natural structure of Lake Kuyucuk offers a mosaic wetland, where shallow zones interlock with sudden drops into deeper basins. When the water level rises in spring and early summer, the shorelines expand and the reeds push further into the lake. In dry years, the retreat of the water affects both bird communities and other wildlife directly; for this reason the lake is also regarded as a model site for water management and combating drought. The harsh continental climate of the Kars region freezes the lake completely in winter; covered in white, its surface slips into near silence until spring. For visitors, Kuyucuk is not only a place to watch birds, but also a vantage point from which to read the steppe landscape with the naked eye. With few trees cutting the horizon, you can see almost the entire lake in a 360-degree view; this openness is a major advantage for both photographers and birdwatchers. Early morning and sunset are the most rewarding times, thanks to the soft light and heightened bird activity. Depending on the wind, the sound of the waves changes and mingles with faint human voices drifting from distant villages; this calm background makes the lake an ideal refuge for those seeking to escape urban noise. The villagers who live around Kuyucuk have long led lives intertwined with the lake. Local families engaged in livestock farming drive their animals to the pastures around the lake, particularly in summer; yet during the birds’ breeding season they take care not to approach certain sensitive areas. Thanks to awareness-raising efforts in recent years, both nature conservation and the culture of welcoming visitors have grown stronger. When you visit, a brief conversation with the villagers helps you understand daily life in the region and offers a chance to hear local stories about the lake’s past. In this way Kuyucuk becomes a tranquil yet lively meeting point where not only the paths of birds, but also those of people, intersect.
