Sarıkamış Historic Train Station and Railway Buildings
Description
Sarıkamış Historic Train Station and Railway Buildings form a well-preserved station complex in Kars’ Sarıkamış district, once serving as one of the key gateways of the railway into eastern Anatolia.
Story
Sarıkamış Historic Train Station and Railway Buildings stand as a quiet stop on the journey through Eastern Anatolia, where the harsh climate has shaped the landscape and where stone and brick give the complex a modest dignity. During the early Republic period, as the railway line connecting Kars to the country’s major cities gained importance, the Sarıkamış station became a strategic hub for both military and civilian transport. For years, when the town spent its winters under meters of snow, the safest and most reliable way to reach Sarıkamış was by train, making the station an inseparable part of daily life. The station buildings reflect the simple lines of modern Turkey’s early architecture, yet the use of cut stone, wooden eaves and wide windows keeps them in harmony with local architectural traditions. The high ceiling and waiting hall at the entrance of the passenger building quietly recall the excitement of those setting off on long journeys, the emotion of soldiers being seen off, and the reunions of those returning from faraway cities. The secondary buildings along the platform include former staff housing, warehouses and small service rooms. Some still serve railway operations today, while others stand idle; old calligraphy signs, numbering on the doors and original railway boards on the walls keep the memory of the past alive. Sarıkamış Station comes to life again especially during the commemorations of the Sarıkamış Campaign and in winter, when visitors arrive for ski tourism. Travelers heading to the ski resort, whether by train or road, pass in front of the station and are greeted by vistas of endless Scots pine forests and a white winter blanket stretching beyond the tracks. For photography enthusiasts, the morning mist drifting over the station and the old wagons makes for striking compositions. In summer, sunset bathes the rails in golden light, transforming the platforms into a different kind of scene. Although the station no longer witnesses the intense traffic of the past, it remains a living witness to how the railway opened Anatolia toward the east. In Sarıkamış, it offers a calm yet meaningful stop not only for those interested in the history of war or skiing, but also for visitors curious about the history of transport. A short walk along the tracks, touching the stone walls of the station building and listening to the distant sound of train whistles open the door to a nostalgic, yet very real, Anatolian journey.
