Sarıkamış Katerina Pavilion (Hunting Lodge) stands on a quiet slope surrounded by Sarıkamış’s Scotch pine forests, where history and nature blend in a striking way. Dating back to the late 19th century, the pavilion is one of the military and civil structures built during the Tsarist Russian period, when the region was valued for its strategic position and harsh climate. Locals say it was named after Empress Catherine II of Russia, but this is more of a romantic legend; in reality, the lodge was designed as a hunting and retreat spot for Russian officers and high-ranking administrators. The building combines cut stone and timber, reflecting a sober yet impressive style influenced by Baltic and Caucasian architecture of the period. Its large windows frame the snow-covered forest like a painting in winter, while the high ceilings and spacious halls were conceived for both comfort and prestige.
