Description

Located in the Develi district of Kayseri at a strategic point on historical trade routes, Develi Castle is an important defensive structure with a deep-rooted history spanning from the Roman/Byzantine period to the Ottoman Empire.

Story

Develi Castle, located in the Develi district of Kayseri, nestled on a strategic hill at the foothills of Mount Erciyes, has been one of the most important defensive structures in the region throughout history. The origins of the castle date back to the Roman and Byzantine Empire periods in the region. During these eras, it was primarily used to protect the southern borders of Central Anatolia and to control important trade routes. Thanks to its elevated position, the castle offered a commanding view of the Develi Plain and its surroundings, making it invaluable militarily. Following the Byzantine period and the Turkification of Anatolia, the castle passed into the hands of the Seljuks and Anatolian Beyliks, particularly the Dulkadiroğulları Beylik, retaining its strategic importance and undergoing renovations during these times. It is believed that some additions bearing traces of Seljuk architecture were also made, accumulating influences from different cultures and civilizations during this process. With the Ottoman Empire's dominance in the region, the castle continued to function as an administrative and military center. However, over time, with changes in defense technologies and the expansion of the empire's borders, it gradually began to lose its former military significance. Today, although Develi Castle is largely in ruins, its standing wall remnants, bastions, and inner castle structures offer clues to its past glory. Visitors can embark on a historical journey by wandering among the castle's ruins, observing the architectural texture of different periods, from Byzantine walls to Seljuk and Ottoman traces. From the hill where the castle is located, the panoramic view of the Develi Plain and the majestic Mount Erciyes rising in the distance offers visitors unique photography opportunities. Especially during sunset, the castle and its surroundings are covered with a captivating atmosphere. Develi Castle, more than just a ruined structure, stands as a silent witness to the rich history of Kayseri and Anatolia, forming part of the cultural heritage extending from the past to the present. It offers visitors both a historical exploration point and a tranquil resting place intertwined with natural beauty.
