Description
Located in the heart of Kayseri, the Museum of Seljuk Civilization, housed within the historic structure of Gevher Nesibe Hospital, presents the unique cultural and scientific heritage of Seljuk civilization to its visitors.
Story
Rising as a structure defying time in the heart of Kayseri's historical fabric, the Gevher Nesibe Hospital now serves as the Museum of Seljuk Civilization. This museum is a significant cultural center that showcases the Seljuk period's pioneering role in medicine and science, its architectural genius, and its social structure. The Gevher Nesibe Hospital and Madrasa were built between 1205-1206 by the will of Gevher Nesibe Sultan, the sister of Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev. The complex consists of two main sections: a madrasa where medical education was provided and a hospital where patients were treated. This structure is considered one of the most advanced medical centers of its time, serving as a comprehensive institution for both medical students and patients. Architecturally, it presents one of the finest examples of Seljuk stonework, characterized by its enclosed courtyard madrasa type and four-iwan plan. Particularly noteworthy are the porticoes in the hospital section, which offered a serene environment for patients, while the madrasa housed cells where students attended classes. After being converted into a museum, it began hosting a rich collection illuminating various aspects of Seljuk civilization. Visitors can see replicas of surgical instruments from Seljuk medicine, models demonstrating the pharmaceutical practices of the era, and the functioning of the hospital. Additionally, objects related to Seljuk daily life, art, science, and education system are on display. The museum conveys the Seljuk understanding of medicine and health to modern visitors, bridging the knowledge accumulation of the past with the present. Thanks to its location in the city center of Kayseri, it is easily accessible for both local and foreign visitors. Visiting the Museum of Seljuk Civilization is not just exploring a historical building, but also an opportunity to witness Anatolia's deep cultural roots and civilizational heritage.
