Story
The Sahabiye Madrasah, located in the Melikgazi district of Kayseri, is one of the rare examples of stone craftsmanship and architectural aesthetics, bearing witness to the glorious period of the Anatolian Seljuk State. The madrasah was built between 1267-1268 by Sahip Ata Fahrettin Ali, the vizier of Seljuk Sultan Kılıçarslan IV. This work is named "Sahabiye" in honor of its founder and played an important role as a center of science, education, and culture during the Seljuk period. The madrasah has a rectangular plan with an open courtyard and porticoes. Around the courtyard are student rooms, classrooms, and a small mosque. Especially its crown gate, exhibits one of the finest examples of Seljuk stone ornamentation art; geometric motifs, muqarnas, and Kufic script transform the gate into a true work of art. Constructed from cut stone, the madrasah has defied centuries with its robust structure. While the interior spaces of the building have a simple layout, the spaciousness of the courtyard and the natural texture of the stone create a peaceful atmosphere. For visitors, the Sahabiye Madrasah offers an opportunity to understand the elegance of Seljuk architecture and the educational philosophy of the period. Its location in Kayseri city center makes it easily accessible. Today, restored and open for cultural events and visits, the madrasah is like an open-air museum carrying deep traces of the past. Looking closely at the details on the crown gate, and imagining the voices of students from centuries ago while walking in the courtyard, transforms this place from just a monument into a living history lesson. The madrasah stands out with its high-quality stone workmanship and balanced proportions, characteristic of Seljuk architecture. Especially the details on the column capitals of the porticoes surrounding the courtyard reveal the delicacy of the artisans of that era. Within Kayseri's rich historical fabric, the Sahabiye Madrasah is a must-see structure, promising visitors both a visual feast and a profound cultural experience. Together with other historical structures in its vicinity, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring Kayseri's Seljuk heritage.
