Story

Nadir Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge located over the Tohma Stream in the Nadir neighbourhood of Darende district in Malatya. Although its exact construction date is not recorded in official documents, its architectural and structural characteristics indicate an Ottoman-era origin. The bridge originally had three arches—one of these has since been closed and another reinforced due to changes over time. With an approximate length of 23 metres and a width of about 3 metres, this structure served as a key crossing point for pedestrians, livestock, and light-carriage traffic on local trade and travel routes. Its position provided an important link between Darende and nearby settlements, facilitating economic and social interactions over successive generations. The detailed stonework and arch construction reflect the traditional masonry techniques and engineering principles of the Ottoman period. Over time, natural wear from weather, water flow, and occasional flooding necessitated restoration and reinforcement work, which have helped preserve the bridge for future generations. Today, Nadir Bridge remains an important cultural heritage site, attracting both history enthusiasts and visitors interested in architectural heritage. Its natural surroundings also lend themselves to photographic exploration and quiet observation. As such, Nadir Bridge continues to be recognized not only as a functional crossing from the past but also as a symbol of Darende’s enduring historical landscape.
