Roman Walls (Battalgazi Walls)
Description
The Roman Walls in Battalgazi are the surviving sections of the historical fortification system that once surrounded the ancient settlement of Malatya.
Story
The Roman Walls are the remains of the defensive perimeter that once enclosed the ancient city located within today’s Battalgazi district of Malatya. Archaeological and historical evidence indicates that the first construction phase dates back to the Roman period, while later repairs and additions during Late Antiquity and the Byzantine era strengthened and reshaped the fortification system. Due to the strategic position of the settlement, the walls served both as a military defense line and as a boundary defining the urban fabric. The preserved sections offer valuable insight into the urban organization and defense architecture of ancient Malatya.
