The Ancient City of Dara, located near Oğuz village in the Nusaybin district of Mardin, in the ancient lands of Southeast Anatolia, is one of the most strategically important border garrison cities of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). Construction of Dara began in 505 AD by Emperor Anastasius, planned as a base and border defense line against the Sasanids. Considered one of the engineering marvels of its era, the city was encircled by robust walls approximately four kilometers long, possessing all the necessary infrastructure for both military and civilian life. One of the most striking structures of the city is its enormous rock-cut cisterns, also known as "dungeons," which supplied water for tens of thousands of soldiers. Even today, these cisterns impress with their water-holding capacity and engineering achievements. Furthermore, the agora, main streets, bridge remnants, and churches located in the center of the ancient city indicate how vibrant a metropolis Dara once was. One of the most impressive sections of the city is the Necropolis area. This area features rock-cut tombs, particularly from the Byzantine period, and spaces referred to as "gallery tombs," believed to have served as collective burial sites for hundreds of people in their lower levels. These tombs provide significant insights into the burial traditions and beliefs of the period. Visitors wandering among Dara's ruins deeply feel the atmosphere of its history and strategic importance. Especially at sunset, the silhouettes of the stone structures under the red light spreading across the Mesopotamian plain offer a captivating view.
