The ruins of Af Kule Monastery are situated near Kayaköy, in Fethiye district of Muğla, on a steep cliff overlooking the sea. The history of this monastery shows similarities with other Byzantine-era structures in the region, yet there is no definitive information regarding its exact construction date. However, considering its architectural features and the general settlement pattern in the area, it is believed to date back to the Byzantine period, specifically the Middle Byzantine period (9th – 13th centuries). The monastery takes its name from its location, known as 'Af Kule'. The structure was built on a rocky outcrop facing the sea, and access to it is via a very challenging path. This difficult access strengthens the idea that the monastery might have been used as a place of retreat for monks. Among the surviving remains of the monastery complex are a structure believed to be a chapel, monastic cells, and wall traces belonging to various living areas. Particularly, the apse of the chapel and remnants of some wall frescoes reveal the religious significance and artistic value of the structure. The strategic location of the monastery also served as a lookout point against dangers coming from the sea.
