However, the theater took its current form during the Roman period. Estimated to have a capacity of approximately 13,000 people, the theater consists of three main sections: the seating rows (cavea), the orchestra, and the stage building (skene). The cavea is built into the hillside, designed to allow spectators to comfortably watch performances. The orchestra area is where choirs and dancers performed. The stage building was used as a setting and preparation area for actors. In ancient times, the theater was used not only for theatrical plays but also for various social and cultural events such as meetings and gladiatorial fights. Remaining buried for centuries, the theater was brought to light in the 1960s through excavation and restoration work. Today, the Bodrum Ancient Theater hosts concerts, festivals, and various events during the summer months.
