Story
The Gümüşkesen Monument is an important monumental structure located in Milas, Muğla, dating back to the Roman period. Believed to have been built in the mid-2nd century AD, this structure is considered a smaller replica of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, and thus attracts great architectural interest. The monument rises on a square base and features Ionic columns on all four facades. Above the columns are rich reliefs and decorations reflecting the architectural characteristics of the period. The most striking feature of the structure is its pyramid-shaped roof. This pyramidal roof gives the monument a monumental appearance and makes it noticeable even from a distance. Although it is not definitively known for whom the Gümüşkesen Monument was built, it is thought to have been constructed for an important figure or family of the period. Inside the monument, there is a burial chamber where the deceased person or persons were interred. The marble blocks used in the construction of the structure were brought from quarries in the region, and the craftsmanship is of very high quality. Although it has suffered some damage over time due to natural conditions and human interaction, it still stands today, offering visitors the grandeur of the Roman era.
