İztuzu Beach, located in Dalyan, a town in the Ortaca district of Muğla, is a unique 4.5-kilometer long sandy beach famous for its natural beauty and as a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (caretta caretta).

İztuzu Beach is situated in one of the rare geographical locations where the Mediterranean Sea and the fresh water of Lake Köyceğiz meet. This unique position allows the beach to host both freshwater and saltwater ecosystems. The beach is particularly known as one of the most important nesting areas for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle species, caretta caretta. Every year, between May and September, female caretta carettas come to this sandy beach to lay their eggs. Therefore, the protection of the beach and respect for the turtles' life cycle are of great importance. The beach was declared a special environmental protection area in 1988, and this status aims to preserve the natural structure and biological diversity of the region. The fact that one side of the beach is surrounded by fresh water and the other by salt water makes it attractive for both scientific research and ecotourism. İztuzu Beach was also the scene of a major environmental struggle against hotel constructions in the 1980s. This struggle gained an international dimension under the leadership of British environmental activist June Haimoff, and as a result, the beach was prevented from being opened for construction. This event marked a turning point for environmental movements in Turkey.
