Thera Ancient City is an important settlement from ancient times, located in the Menteşe district of Muğla.
Story
Thera Ancient City is situated within the borders of Düğerek Neighborhood, Menteşe district of Muğla, on the southern slope of Kocadağ. The history of the city dates back especially to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Surface surveys and limited excavation works have revealed that the region experienced intensive settlement from ancient times. The acropolis of the city is located on a dominant hill, offering clear views of the surrounding valleys and plains. Remains of city walls, civil structures, and possibly foundations of a temple have been identified on the acropolis. In the lower parts of the city, there are residential areas, a necropolis, and agricultural lands. The presence of different types of tombs in the necropolis area, in particular, indicates that Thera hosted various social classes. The city's economy was most likely based on agriculture and animal husbandry. The fertile lands and proximity to water sources in the region made it an attractive settlement in ancient times. Although there is no definitive information about Thera's relations with neighboring cities and its place in the trade network, it should be evaluated within the general cultural and economic structure of the Carian region.
