Story

Kaz (Gaz) Lake is a karstic lake located near the township of Aktuzla in the Malazgirt district of Muş. Due to its natural characteristics, the water is salty and bitter, distinguishing it from other freshwater lakes in the region. The shores of the lake are lined with extensive reed beds, forming a lively wetland ecosystem, especially in spring when the vegetation comes to life. Many waterbird species such as geese, ducks and moorhens can be observed here, making the lake a potential attraction for birdwatchers and nature photographers. For the local community, Kaz Lake is both a natural asset and one of the defining features of the Malazgirt plain. The absence of dense construction or large facilities around the lake has helped preserve its tranquil and relatively undisturbed character. At sunset, the reflections on the lake surface and the silhouettes of the reeds create a simple yet striking landscape. During the migration periods, particularly from late summer to early autumn, various bird species can be seen using the lake and its surroundings as a resting and feeding ground. Although Kaz (Gaz) Lake is not a major tourism center on its own, it fits well into a combined route together with historical sites such as Malazgirt Castle and the Malazgirt Victory Monument. Visitors to the area can follow the traces of the 1071 Battle of Malazgirt while also discovering this hidden wetland in the middle of the Eastern Anatolian steppe.
