Located in the Derinkuyu district of Nevşehir, in the heart of Cappadocia, Derinkuyu Underground City is a fascinating example of how the region's geological structure merged with human ingenuity. Constructed by carving into the easily workable volcanic tuff rock, this massive structure was designed not merely as a refuge but as a fully equipped living space. While the exact origins of the underground city are unknown, it is thought to date back to the Phrygian period and became an important sanctuary for Christian communities during the Roman Empire and Byzantine eras, especially during the Arab-Byzantine wars. Eight of its estimated eighteen levels are open to visitors, descending to a depth of 55 meters. As visitors navigate the narrow passages, they witness the awe-inspiring details of ancient engineering. The city features various living units such as stables, storage rooms, kitchens, dining halls, churches, wineries, and even a missionary school. Ventilation shafts on every level transported fresh air even to the deepest sections, demonstrating the advanced planning of this ancient complex. Heavy rolling stone doors were used to seal the city against external threats; these cylindrical stones could be easily moved from the inside but were impossible to open from the outside.
