Description

Nevşehir Castle is a historical structure located in the city center, built on Byzantine foundations and expanded during the Ottoman period.

Story

Nevşehir Castle rises in the heart of Cappadocia, in the Merkez district of Nevşehir city, as an important part of its historical and cultural fabric. While the castle's history dates back to the Byzantine Empire, its current prominent structure and expansions took shape during the Ottoman Empire, especially with the construction activities carried out by Damat İbrahim Pasha in the 18th century. Emphasizing the city's strategic location, the castle has been used as both a defense and administrative center over time. The remains of the castle that have survived to this day reflect the architectural features and defense understanding of its period. With its wide walls, bastions, and inner courtyards, Nevşehir Castle offers visitors the opportunity to trace the footsteps of the past. In recent years, archaeological excavations and restoration works around Nevşehir Castle have opened the doors to a hidden world beneath the castle. Starting in 2014, a massive complex believed to be one of the world's largest underground cities was discovered at the foot of the castle. This underground city, with its tunnels, rooms, places of worship, living areas, and water channels, has the capacity to house thousands of people and spans a much larger area than the known underground settlements of the Cappadocia region. This discovery has extended the castle's importance beyond its surface structures, connecting it with its history in the depths. While research continues on the exact period and function of the underground city, it is estimated to have been in use since the Byzantine period. Nevşehir Castle and the surrounding underground city offer visitors unique examples of both surface and subsurface architecture. From the hilltop where the castle is located, it is possible to watch the panoramic view of Nevşehir. Restoration and opening efforts are currently ongoing at the castle and the underground city, so visitors may encounter restrictions in accessing some areas. However, even in its current state, Nevşehir Castle is a fascinating stop for history enthusiasts and archaeology lovers. Its dominant position over the city makes it an ideal spot for photography and observing the surroundings. Visiting the castle is an important experience that shows Cappadocia is not just about fairy chimneys but also possesses a deep history and mysterious underground structures. Visitors, as they wander among the castle walls, can feel the traces of civilizations that have lived in these lands for centuries and enjoy discovering this lesser-known aspect of Cappadocia.
