Story

Located near Özkonak Town in the Avanos district of Nevşehir, Özkonak Underground City is one of Cappadocia's mysterious settlements. Discovered accidentally by a farmer in his field in 1972, this ancient settlement, like other underground cities in the region, was built during the early Christian period to protect against persecution from the Roman and Byzantine Empires and Arab raids. Carved into volcanic tuff rocks, the city forms an extensive labyrinthine network beneath the surface. Visitors explore multiple layers by passing through narrow passages and ascending and descending stairs. The city's architecture was skillfully designed to ensure the sustainability of life. Inside, there are living areas, food storage rooms, wine production workshops, kitchens, ventilation shafts, and even stables. One particularly noteworthy feature is the colossal millstone-shaped sliding doors used to seal the entrance of each level against enemy attacks. These doors could be easily moved from the inside but were nearly impossible to open from the outside. Additionally, there are holes extending from top to bottom, designed to prevent enemies from infiltrating and to communicate with those inside, through which poisonous gas could also be discharged. Özkonak Underground City, unlike some other Cappadocian underground cities, has a simpler structure, yet it is highly developed in terms of its defense mechanisms and planning. Visitors embarking on a journey through this unique structure delve into the depths of history and gain insight into the living conditions of thousands of years ago. The cool and silent atmosphere inside offers an ideal environment to escape the chaos of the outside world and trace the footsteps of ancient civilizations. Consistent with the general atmosphere of Cappadocia, Özkonak is an important stop that showcases the region's geological and historical richness. Despite more than half a century passing since its discovery, it is believed that there are still undiscovered sections, adding a distinct mystique to the city. This underground city, with both its architectural genius and stories of past lives, is one of Nevşehir's hidden treasures that captivates its visitors.
