Story
Zelve Open Air Museum, located within the borders of Avanos district in Cappadocia, is one of the oldest and longest-used rock-cut settlements in the region. This natural museum, consisting of three valleys, maintained its existence as a continuous living space from the early Christian period until the mid-20th century. Zelve is considered one of the places where monastic life first emerged and was most intensely lived, and it is also a unique laboratory for observing the development and changes in rock-cut architecture in the region. Churches, monasteries, chapels, houses, tunnels, and dovecotes carved into the steep slopes of the valleys showcase to visitors the harmonious coexistence of Cappadocia's unique geological structure and human hand. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, it was an important educational and religious center for Christians. It contains cells where monks retreated, large church spaces where rituals were held, and communal areas bearing the traces of daily life. Especially the three churches located at different levels of the valley attract attention with their religious motifs and fresco remnants. Some of the fairy chimneys formed by natural erosion have weathered into different forms over time, while others have been carved by human hands, acquiring a completely different identity. The inhabitants of Zelve, who were evacuated in 1952 due to the danger of rockfall and moved to the nearby Aktepe village, left the traces of their past in this valley.
