Göltepe–Kestel Archaeological Site
Description
An important Early Bronze Age archaeological area in the Çamardı–Celaller region of Niğde, associated with ancient tin mining activities.
Story
The Göltepe–Kestel Archaeological Site is a settlement–mining complex located in Çamardı, Niğde, and holds a distinguished place in world archaeology for its role in Early Bronze Age metallurgy. The area consists of two main components: the settlement at Göltepe and the Kestel tin mine on the opposite slope. Excavations revealed grinding stones, slag fragments, ceramics and production residues, indicating an organized mining and ore-processing system closely linked with the settlement. The site is regarded as one of the key references for understanding tin production and early mining technologies in Anatolia. Many of the finds are exhibited in the Niğde Archaeological Museum, and the area is interpreted not only as a local habitation zone but also as a production center connected to wider regional trade networks. Today, Göltepe–Kestel serves as a unique research landscape for archaeology and the history of science, offering an in-situ perspective on Anatolia’s early metallurgical culture.
