Double Bath (Historic Bath)

Story

Double Bath, one of the most mysterious structures that sheds light on Ünye's thousands of years of history and multicultural fabric, is a rare representative of the Ottoman-era bathing culture on the Black Sea coast that has survived to the present day. It takes its name 'Double' from the fact that it consists of two main sections separated for women and men, a situation that is an architectural reflection of the social life and understanding of privacy in the period when the structure was built. This magnificent structure, built using rubble and cut stone, bears the characteristic features of classical Ottoman bath architecture with its domes and arched passages. In the center of Ünye, with its stance that defies time, this bath is proof that the city was not only a trade center but also a focus of civilization. When entering the interior, the transitions between the bath's hot, cold and private sections symbolize the purifying effect of water and steam on the human soul. The light beams filtering through the small windows called 'elephant eyes' on the domes create mystical plays on the marble floors. This place where merchants, sailors and local people who came to Ünye for centuries relaxed has been restored and brought to tourism and cultural activities today. The thickness of the stone walls, the moment you step inside, isolates you from the noise and heat of the outside world and draws you into the depths of history. Double Bath is not only a bathing area but also an example of architectural genius. The underfloor heating system (hell chamber) and water distribution channels reveal the engineering knowledge of the period. Today, this structure, as one of the most important stops on Ünye's 'Living Cultural Heritage' route, offers visitors a visual feast intertwined with history. While the bath's aesthetic domes add a separate beauty to the district's silhouette, thousands of stories hidden behind each stone await visitors.
