Hoynat Island
Story
Hoynat Island, one of the Black Sea coastal road's most enchanting points and located within Perşembe district boundaries, is a natural monument rising like a majestic castle in the middle of the sea. This island, used as a refuge and observation point by sailors throughout history, has become one of Turkey's most important bird reserves today. The island's biggest feature is that it is the only nesting area in Turkey for the 'Crested Cormorant' birds under the threat of extinction. This rock piece where silver gulls also live intensively resembles a nature documentary scene with the turquoise waters around it and thousands of birds perched on it. Being closed to human access has ensured the island remains an unspoiled paradise for wildlife. On Hoynat Island, which served as a harbor where sailors took refuge in stormy weather in ancient times, it is known that there are wall and structure remains from the past. This situation shows that the island has had strategic importance since ancient times. The island being very close to land offers visitors the opportunity to observe this unique bird colony from the shore with binoculars or the naked eye. This massive rock mass eroded by the Black Sea's wild waves over thousands of years is the most aesthetic geological formation of the coastline. Especially at sunset, when the sun meets the sea, the island's silhouette and the sound of thousands of birds flying around it give visitors an unforgettable spiritual tranquility. Hoynat Island is one of the most important elements completing the identity of Perşembe district, which has the 'Slow City' (Cittaslow) title of Ordu. This view appearing suddenly while passing on the highway invites travelers to stop and watch this natural beauty. Thanks to the viewing terraces and environmental arrangements made by Ordu Governorship, it is possible to watch this beauty without damaging the island's ecosystem. Hoynat Island is the most beautiful symbol of nature's protective power, biological diversity and that fragile life sheltering within the Black Sea's wild waters. This is not just a view, but a living museum showing how life resists within its own cycle.
