Description
Küpkaya Canyon
Story
Küpkaya Canyon, a natural wonder formed by water patiently carving stone over thousands of years in Ordu's hidden geography, is one of Ulubey district's most impressive natural formations. The canyon gets its name from the massive holes and circular forms that water has carved into the rocks with its flow power, which resemble cubes in shape. This geological work of art, created by the Black Sea's wild streams eroding limestone and basalt layers, offers a narrow passage approximately 250 meters long. While the canyon's walls reach heights of 10-15 meters in places, trapping the sky in a narrow strip, the turquoise and emerald green waters flowing below open the gates of an unreal world to visitors. The biggest feature that distinguishes Küpkaya Canyon from its similar ones is that the water's temperature remains around 5-10 degrees even in summer months, creating a natural air conditioning effect. This is not only a visual feast but also a challenging yet equally rewarding course for canoe enthusiasts, nature hikers and adventure seekers. As you progress deeper into the canyon, the smooth curves on the rocks and the giant cauldrons created by water once again prove how great an artist nature is. The dense forest texture surrounding the canyon completely isolates this place from the outside world, creating a mystical atmosphere where only the sound of water and bird chirping are heard. This is also a pristine water source with local trout for those interested in fishing. The rest areas located at the canyon entrance offer the opportunity to watch this unique view while tasting the region's local flavors. Küpkaya Canyon is the most concrete proof that Ordu is not just about its coastline, but contains deep and pristine treasures waiting to be discovered in its inner regions. A few hours spent here allow one to strengthen their connection with nature again, and reach the peaks of tranquility and aesthetics by moving away from the chaos of the modern world. The canyon, which takes on a different color palette in each season, tells a completely different story with its frozen waterfalls in winter and rushing waters in spring on each visit.
Visit Tips
- Since you will be walking in water or on slippery rocks inside the canyon, definitely use water shoes or professional outdoor shoes.
- Since the water temperature is very low, if you plan to go deep into the canyon, it is recommended that you bring protective clothing (wetsuit, etc.).
- You can crown your trip with a gastronomic experience by eating fresh trout at local businesses at the canyon entrance.
- Especially for canoe and whitewater sports, prefer late spring and early summer periods when water flow is most suitable.
