Çağrankaya Plateau
Description
A popular natural area in Rize known for its natural beauty, thermal springs, and highland life.
Story
Çağrankaya Plateau, named after its echoing rocks, is one of the widest and most magnificent settlement areas of İkizdere district. Located at approximately 2300 meters elevation, this plateau becomes inaccessible in winter when snow closes the roads, while in summer it becomes a massive settlement area where thousands of plateau dwellers flock. The name 'Çağrankaya' comes from the surrounding steep rocks causing sound to echo, which adds a mystical and living spirit to the plateau. Çağrankaya is so extensive in location that it has been a common living and trading area for centuries, not only for İkizdere residents but also for people from surrounding districts. The most fascinating aspect of Çağrankaya Plateau is the unique landscape diversity it offers. On one side, you can watch the sea of fog of the Black Sea, while on the other side, on a sunny day, you can greet the highest peaks of Kaçkar. The houses on the plateau bear traces of traditional Black Sea plateau architecture; wooden structures built on stone foundations are positioned according to the harsh blowing of the wind. This is one of the places where the 'plateau migration' tradition is most vividly maintained. The arduous but joyful journey made with herds, when it ends at Çağrankaya, the tables set up and fires lit display true Anatolian hospitality. The plateau's vegetation consists of high-altitude meadows, and the flowers growing on these meadows determine the quality of animal husbandry in the region. The taste of cheese and butter made at Çağrankaya is a result of this natural feeding. For nature photographers, Çağrankaya offers unique scenes, especially in the first light of morning or in the afternoon when shadows fall on the rocks as the sun lowers. Visiting here is not just going to a plateau, but listening to nature's voice and heeding the call of the rocks. Çağrankaya is a special geography where both tranquility and the joyful spirit of Black Sea people blend within the same stone walls.
Visit Tips
- The access road to the plateau is usually dirt; therefore, going with a high-clearance vehicle and preferably a 4x4 makes the journey easier.
- Don't forget to test your voice in the rocky areas around the plateau to experience the echo feature; it's like nature's response to you.
- Since market or advanced facility options are limited in the area, stock up on food and basic supplies from İkizdere center before setting out.
- If you will stay overnight on the plateau, remember that the temperature difference between night and day can reach 15-20 degrees and bring thermal clothing.
