Description

It is an area in the Güneysu district of Rize, known for its natural beauty.

Story

Güneysu Valley, one of Rize's greenest and most strategic corridors, is a magnificent nature passage that takes the city from the coast to the foothills of the Kaçkar Mountains. The valley takes its name from the Güneysu (Potomya) stream that passes through it and gives life to the region. This area, displaying the Black Sea's typical deep and steep valley structure, resembles the world's largest 'green stairs' with tea gardens hanging on steep slopes. Each curve of the valley offers visitors the most original examples of Black Sea architecture; the centuries-old mansions standing like castles on the slopes are proof of the region's people's victory against challenging geography. Güneysu Valley, thanks to its microclimatic climate, is an agricultural paradise where not only tea but also corn, hazelnuts, and many fruit species grow most productively. As you progress toward the inner parts of the valley, the sound of water intensifies and the vegetation becomes even denser. This is one of the places where Rize's local culture, traditional way of life, and 'neighborliness' law continue in their purest form. The suspension bridges you'll see along the way connect the valley's two banks, while the small water mills built on the stream carry traces of the past to the present. Güneysu Valley, also being the main route to high-altitude points like Handüzü Plateau, offers a vertical ecological journey extending from sea level to above the clouds. Watching the movements of fog along the valley, listening to bird sounds in the forest, and taking breaks at the small waterfalls you encounter at each turn completely purifies one from the stress of the modern world. For visitors, Güneysu Valley contains many hidden corners waiting to be discovered. The smell of stone oven bread made in the villages on the valley's slopes, when combined with clean mountain air, creates an unforgettable sensory experience. For nature walking enthusiasts, the trails within the valley offer unique routes passing through chestnut and alder forests to reach hidden waterfalls. This is a living ecosystem where you can breathe both Rize's cultural and natural heritage simultaneously, donning a different color palette each season (yellow to red in autumn, white in winter). Güneysu Valley is a Rize classic where water's abundance meets earth's generosity, and peace is hidden under each leaf.

  • When taking photos on the suspension bridges you'll encounter along the way, pay attention to the maximum number of people at the same time and avoid sudden movements.
