Description

It is an area in the İkizdere district of Rize, known for its natural beauty.

Story

Ovit Plateau, standing on the ancient routes connecting Rize to Erzurum with its summit challenging the sky at 2640 meters elevation, is one of the most strategic and magnificent crossing points of Eastern Black Sea. This plateau, which spends more than half of the year under snow, is also known as the 'capital of snow'. This geography spread across the slopes of Mount Ovit comes alive in winter with a pristine white silence, while in summer with lush meadows bursting forth after the melting snows and ice-cold glacial lakes. Although transportation has been facilitated with the construction of Ovit Tunnel, one of Turkey's longest tunnels, the true spirit of the plateau lies in that famous summit road and the feeling of infinity at the peak. Ovit Plateau is not just a transportation route, but also the fortress of a millennia-old plateau culture. The stone houses on the plateau are built to withstand the region's harsh climate conditions. This place transforms into a massive cultural space hosting tens of thousands of people with the 'Ovit Plateau Festivals' held every August, where horon circles are formed. The kemence sounds echoing from every corner of the plateau during the festivals symbolize the joy of the human spirit against the harshness of the mountains. Additionally, Ovit is an indispensable starting point for professional mountaineers and campers due to its proximity to the Seven Lakes (Yedigöller) region nearby. At Ovit, the sky is so close that when night falls, you can see the stars shining like lights spilled into the sea. During the day, the sea of clouds lies beneath your feet and you feel as if you are sailing on a ship in the sky. The cool waters and pristine air of the plateau wash away all physical and mental fatigue. Stopping at Ovit Plateau to eat the famous plateau kavurma or drink a cup of strong tea is one of the most meaningful rituals of a Black Sea journey. This place is both a giant that does not give passage, and a generous host that opens its heart to its guests.

Visit Tips

  • Ovit Tunnel shortens the route, but if you want to see the real plateau scenery (if weather conditions permit), we recommend using the old summit road.
  • If you want to climb higher from the plateau to see the glacial lakes, you should bring professional trekking equipment.
  • During the festival periods in summer, the plateau can be quite crowded; choose days outside the festival week for a calmer visit.
  • Ovit is also becoming popular for winter sports and activities like snow tracking; if you're going in winter, move with professional guides.
