Story

Akçakale Castle rises quietly at the tip of a small peninsula stretching into the Black Sea, in the Akçaabat district of Trabzon. Although it is now surrounded by calm residential neighborhoods, one can almost still hear the footsteps of soldiers who once watched every ship passing by for centuries. According to most experts, the castle was built during the Byzantine period to protect Trabzon and its surroundings against attacks coming from the sea. Its position is open enough to see ships approaching from both east and west, and at the same time naturally defended by rocky coastal cliffs. As you approach the castle today, you first cross the narrow land bridge of the peninsula, then feel the cool breeze rising from the sea. The ramparts and towers are largely worn down, yet the solidity of the stonework is still evident. Massive cut-stone blocks that have managed to withstand cannon fire and storms are especially striking on the seaward walls. Most of the military buildings thought to have stood inside the castle have disappeared over time, replaced by grassy patches and a few foundation remains; even this emptiness allows visitors to imagine how lively and crowded the place must once have been. Throughout history, Akçakale Castle served not only as a defensive stronghold but also as an observation post. Merchant ships, pirate vessels, or enemy fleets approaching the shore would first be spotted from here, and warnings would be sent to the interior of Trabzon. During the Ottoman period the castle did not completely lose its importance; it was occasionally repaired and reused. However, as warfare technology changed and coastal defense shifted to different systems, the site gradually fell silent and eventually took on the character of a historical monument. Today, one of the most striking aspects for visitors is undoubtedly the view. Looking out from between the towers, you see the curves of the coastline to your right and left, and in front of you the Black Sea stretching out to the horizon. On clear days, as the late-afternoon sun slowly descends over the water and the shadows of the stone walls grow longer, the castle seems to glow in a golden hue. For photography enthusiasts, these hours are ideal for capturing both the texture of the fortress and the changing colors of the sea. The castle has not yet been fully developed as a conventional tourist site; this offers those who come here a more natural and tranquil atmosphere. Instead of noisy crowds, you listen to the sound of waves and the wind swirling around the stones. Still, it is important to follow basic safety rules and avoid getting too close to the edges of the walls. A visit can be easily planned with a short trip from Trabzon’s city center; as you pass through the coastal settlements of Akçaabat, you also gain the chance to observe how Black Sea culture is intertwined with everyday life. Akçakale Castle remains an unpretentious yet impressive symbol of Trabzon’s deep connection with history, nature, and the sea.
