Description

Located in Trabzon’s Maçka district, Altındere Valley is a protected national park famous for its dense forests, steep cliffs, and the iconic Sumela Monastery.

Story

Altındere Valley is a special gorge hidden among the rising mountains that curve inland from the Maçka district of Trabzon, offering both natural beauty and cultural heritage at the same time. Thanks to the humid Black Sea climate, the valley is covered in dozens of shades of green for most of the year and is protected within the boundaries of Altındere National Park. The Altındere Stream flows between steep cliffs, accompanying visitors with its ever‑changing sound, while the sudden descent and lifting of the mist adds a mysterious character to the atmosphere. The most famous symbol of the valley is, of course, the Sumela Monastery that seems to cling to the rocks. Shaped by a tradition dating back to the 4th century in the Byzantine period, this monastery, with its carved rooms, chapels, and aqueducts on the steep slope of Altındere Valley, demonstrates a striking relationship between human hands and nature. The area retained its importance during the Ottoman era as well, attracting attention in different periods of the empire both religiously and administratively, while the surrounding villages formed bonds with the valley through trade and agriculture. As you walk through Altındere Valley, the paths sometimes lead deep into dense spruce and beech forests, and at other times open onto rocky clearings that allow a view down to the valley floor. Especially in spring and autumn, as the colors of the forest change, waterfalls and small streams flow more strongly, offering unique frames for photography enthusiasts. Birdsongs, the distant murmur of water, and the wind rustling through the trees create a background that resembles a natural orchestra. In modern Turkey, Altındere Valley was declared a national park and is both preserved and opened to visitors through a controlled access system, hiking trails, viewing platforms, and information panels. While exploring the valley, one can see not only the monastery, but also traditional stone houses, old watermills, and the characteristic forest texture of the region. Today, Altındere offers layered experiences for domestic and foreign travelers coming to Trabzon, from a short day trip escape to nature hikes and photography tours. One of the strongest impressions for visitors is the feeling that time slows down the moment they step into the valley. This route, where monks, travelers, and merchants have left their mark for centuries, now remains in memories with its original atmosphere in which nature and history are interwoven.
