Cal Cave
Description
Located in the Düzköy district of Trabzon, it is a natural formation considered one of the longest caves in the world, famous for its underground stream and stalactites-stalagmites.
Story
Cal Cave is located on the steep slopes of the town of Çal in the Düzköy district of Trabzon, at an altitude of around 1,050 meters above sea level. In the rainy, cool climate of the Black Sea region, this cave was formed over millions of years as limestone rocks were eroded by water, and today it resembles an impressive natural laboratory that attracts both scientists and travelers. With a total length estimated to reach about eight kilometers, it is regarded as one of the longest caves in Turkey and in the world. When you reach the entrance of the cave, you are first greeted by views of village houses and the surrounding tea and corn fields. Then, you step inside through the entrance area that has been made safe with wooden walkways and railings anchored to the rock. The cool, humid air that hits your face at the very first moment creates an instant contrast with the temperature outside. Inside, the temperature remains nearly constant at about 12–14 degrees throughout the year, defining the cave’s internal climate. The underground stream running through Cal Cave gives the place both its visual and acoustic character. Where the water cascades through the rocks, small waterfalls and pools are formed, and at some points you cross over the water via wooden bridges. The lighting is adjusted so as not to overpower the natural texture; warm yellow and white tones highlight the stalactites on the ceiling and the stalagmites on the floor. These formations, shaped over thousands of years by dripping calcareous water, are a reminder of nature’s patience and the power of time. Although only a few hundred meters of the cave are open to tourists, side branches and continuing galleries are still being explored by speleologists. Locals say that the cave’s atmosphere helps some visitors with respiratory problems such as asthma; even if this is not scientifically proven, the cool and humid air feels refreshing for many. Outside, viewing terraces, tea gardens and small eateries serving local dishes allow visitors to rest. In the late afternoon, the mist that settles over the valley and the deep green of the mountains turn Cal Cave into more than just a cave, transforming it into a complete nature experience.
