As you walk through the narrow streets of Trabzon’s historic Ortahisar quarter, the first large mass that suddenly appears between stone walls is often the Fatih Mosque. Known today as an Ottoman mosque, the building is in fact the result of a much older, Byzantine layer of the city’s long history. Formerly called Panaghia Chrysokephalos, meaning “Golden-Headed Mary,” it served for centuries as one of the principal cathedrals of the Empire of Trebizond and was regarded as a major religious and political center of the city. With roots reaching back to the 13th century, the structure is a silent witness to Trabzon’s strategic position on the Black Sea, to trade routes and imperial ambitions. If you look carefully at its stone façade, you can still sense the Byzantine masonry, the proportions of the windows, and, despite later alterations, the basilican layout that remains legible. In 1461, when Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror captured Trabzon, the cathedral was converted into a mosque under Ottoman rule. A mihrab, minbar, and minaret were added, and the building acquired a new identity. Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is the calm atmosphere. The high vaulted ceiling, the later-added wooden elements, and the modest ornamentation bring together the stone-heavy character of Byzantium with the Ottoman understanding of interior space. Some arches and wall traces recall the time when the structure functioned as a church; although most of the frescoes have disappeared, the architectural scheme still points clearly to its Christian past. This dual heritage transforms Fatih Mosque into more than a place of worship; it becomes one of the rare buildings where Trabzon’s multilayered history can be read. While visiting the mosque, the traditional texture of the surrounding Ortahisar neighborhood also becomes part of the experience.
