Story

Clinging to the steep slopes of Trabzon’s Ortahisar district, the Girls' Monastery appears on misty mornings like a silhouette floating above the city, where the moist air rising from the sea blends with fog. Dedicated to Panaghia Theoskepastos, meaning “Mary protected by God”, this monastic complex was built in the Byzantine period and continued to live on under the Komnenos dynasty and Ottoman rule through various repairs and additions. Today, when you step into its courtyard, you encounter the stone traces of a once enclosed world filled with prayers, hymns and the sound of bells. The monastery reveals the multi-layered history of Trabzon with chapels clinging to the natural rock mass, a rock-cut church where fragments of frescoes can still be seen, and wall-like fortifications encircling the site. In the frescoes, the faded colors of Virgin Mary figures, saints and Gospel scenes are still discernible; even these broken, pale lines are a silent proof that this was once a powerful center of faith and art. As you wander around the courtyard, it is hard not to think of the countless footsteps that have worn down the stone stairs over centuries, and of how the narrow corridors and small rooms once bore witness to the daily life of the monks and nuns. Thanks to its location, the monastery offers one of the most impressive panoramas of Trabzon. On one side stretches the deep blue of the Black Sea, on the other the historic neighborhoods of Ortahisar; this contrast creates a scene in which nature and faith, city life and monastic seclusion intertwine. Recent restoration works aim to preserve the authentic fabric of the structure while allowing visitors to follow a safe and comprehensible route. Yet the cracks in the walls, the patches of fallen plaster and the exposed stone surfaces lend the place an authentic sense of fragility. Visiting the Girls' Monastery is not only about seeing a historical building, but also about understanding how Trabzon’s cultural identity has been shaped. Here, Byzantium, local Christian tradition and subsequent Ottoman influences meet within a single courtyard. Although the quiet steps of the nuns are no longer heard, the murmur carried by the wind as it moves between the walls continues to whisper the centuries-old story of the monastery.
