Natural Area

Description

Kadıralak Plateau is a natural highland near Tonya, famed for its purple flowers in spring and its cool mountain air.

Story

Kadıralak Plateau in the Tonya district of Trabzon is a highland where the cool breeze of the Eastern Black Sea, the scent of pine trees and mist-dancing hills come together, and in recent years it has become a popular escape for those wishing to get away from city life. With an altitude of more than a thousand meters above sea level, it offers fresh, cool air even in summer. For centuries it has been both a summer pasture for local villagers and a seasonal retreat where people take refuge during the hot months. Especially from late spring to early summer, the plateau is draped in shades of purple and blue; flowers known locally as “mavi yıldız” or crocus cover large areas and create a striking visual feast. The cultural importance of Kadıralak Plateau goes beyond its scenery. Families from Tonya and surrounding villages still continue the traditional transhumance every summer, and life returns to the wooden-and-stone plateau houses. In the early morning, livestock are driven to the pastures; in the late afternoon, the sound of their bells echoes through the valley. Corn bread, butter and kuymak, a local cornmeal and cheese dish, are indispensable parts of the hospitality extended to guests. With a bit of luck, visitors may witness local people dancing the horon accompanied by kemençe, the traditional fiddle of the Black Sea, or even join the circle themselves. The natural character of the plateau has been largely preserved, with wide meadows, small springs and forest-fringed paths. Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy easy to moderate trekking routes that follow the surrounding ridges. On clear days, the green slopes hanging beneath the cloud line and the distant silhouettes of other plateaus provide impressive frames for photographers. When the fog rolls in, the atmosphere changes completely; visibility may drop to just a few meters, offering a chance to feel the mystical side of the Black Sea highlands. Although Kadıralak Plateau does not host grand monuments or historical ruins, it functions as a living open-air stage where the region’s pastoral culture continues into the present. Despite the rapidly changing rhythm of life in modern Turkey, time flows more slowly here. Visitors can sense the calm of nature while observing traces of a way of life that has endured for centuries. In suitable weather, setting up a tent, watching the sunrise over a sea of clouds and stargazing at night become unforgettable parts of the Kadıralak experience.
