Sarlı Castle is a relatively small defensive structure hidden on the forested slopes inland from Sürmene, yet its position has preserved its importance for centuries. As you climb away from sea level, the deep blue of the Black Sea and the green of the valleys slowly open up, and the closer you get to the castle, the easier it is to understand why this view was considered ideal for a lookout point. Like many similar fortifications in the region, it was built in the Byzantine period to control the coastline and interior passes, and later repaired and partially reused during the Ottoman era. Today, when you reach the castle you are greeted by partially standing curtain walls, irregular open spaces that suggest an inner courtyard, and stonework that clearly bears the marks of time. The rubble masonry, the lime mortar between the stones, and the occasional spolia blocks indicate that the structure underwent several phases of repair. The plan is quite simple; the main body rests on a narrow ridge that offers wide views both towards the sea and towards the valley. Some researchers point out that the castle was not only military in function, but also used to oversee the trade routes passing through the area. The surroundings of Sarlı Castle offer an atmosphere woven with mist, especially in spring and autumn. In the early morning, fog fills the valley and rises up to the ramparts; a few hours later, when the sun breaks through, the mist dissipates and the fields, tea gardens, and mountain villages below come into full view. For visitors, this changing weather creates different scenes for both photography and quiet observation. Some of the paths leading up to the castle are a mix of earth and stone; on rainy days they can get slippery, so sturdy shoes make the walk much more comfortable. There is no museum setup or on-site staff at the castle today, but its silence and natural setting offer a highly personal sense of exploration. Climbing onto the walls can be risky, so the best views are usually found from clearings just below the fortress and from safe points along the exterior walls.
