Story

Sürmene Çamburnu Nature Reserve forms one of the most special green belts on the Black Sea coast, to the east of Trabzon. This is a place where sea and forest almost merge into one; its natural woodland, dominated by red pine and Scots pine, is seen as a breathing oasis amid the dense development along the coastline. As you drive along the Black Sea coastal road, the dense forest cover suddenly appears, and with a sharp curve you are presented with a striking view where blue and green meet in an instant. The area gained protected status in the period of Modern Turkey, and thus one of the few remaining natural pine forests along the coast was officially secured. Over the years, Çamburnu has become an escape point for both locals and nature lovers, offering a multi‑sensory experience with birdsong, the scent of resin and the ever‑changing sea breeze. Especially in the early morning, when mist moves between the tree trunks, it creates enchanting scenes that photographers eagerly pursue. The reserve is notable for pine trees clinging to steep slopes, a lower layer of maquis and scrub vegetation, and occasional “windows” that open onto the sea between them. In areas close to the shore, the humid Black Sea climate keeps a rich plant diversity vibrant throughout the year. In terms of wildlife, the region provides habitat for many bird species, small mammals and reptiles. Seasonal bird migrations also make the area attractive to nature photographers and ornithologists interested in observation. Viewpoints and paths prepared for visitors provide controlled access to the reserve’s most characteristic landscapes. With short walks you can step into the forest, enjoy shade and cool air, and then, after just a few more steps, reach an open spot from which you watch the horizon line of the sea stretching into the distance. Although the coastal road is busier in summer, once you step into the forest the traffic noise largely fades behind you, replaced by birdsong mingling with the sound of the waves. The cultural importance of Sürmene Çamburnu is not limited to its natural beauty. For local people, this is a place for family picnics, where children encounter the sea and the forest at the same time for the first time, and where one escapes the rush of the city. Having become a stop on traditional Black Sea journeys, the area also helps to raise environmental awareness. As threats such as forest fires and coastal degradation have been experienced, the vital importance of protecting Çamburnu has become clearer, leading locals and visitors to show greater respect for the rules. Today, rules such as not lighting fires, collecting one’s rubbish and not leaving the designated trails are constantly reminded by signs and by local authorities. Thanks to this sensitivity, Çamburnu survives as one of the few places on the Black Sea coast that has remained truly natural. Even spending just a few hours here offers the chance to get to know the Black Sea ecosystem up close and to reconnect with nature.
