Story

Zagnos Tower and City Walls, located in Ortahisar, the historic core of Trabzon, are among the most striking structures that carry the memory of the city carved into stone. Guarding the western side of the old town, this line of fortifications rises along a steep valley, taking advantage of a natural defensive setting and commanding view. The imposing stone walls you see when you look up from today’s Zagnos Valley Park are in fact surviving parts of a defensive system that began to take shape in the Roman and Byzantine periods and continued to be repaired and used under Ottoman rule. The name Zagnos comes from Zagnos Pasha, one of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror’s commanders. After Trabzon was incorporated into the Ottoman realm in 1461, this section of the walls retained its military and administrative importance and became the city’s western gateway. The bastions, constructed with thick ashlar masonry, the embrasures between them and the small watch posts have withstood centuries despite the harsh Black Sea climate. Traces of repairs on the walls are silent witnesses of interventions from different periods. Today, Zagnos Tower and the walls, together with the green recreational area and walking paths at their foot, form an open-air stage where history and daily life intertwine. Visitors who reach the upper parts of the ramparts can see Trabzon’s red-roofed houses, the old neighborhood fabric around Ortahisar Mosque, and the deep valley in a single frame. At sunset, the changing color of the light on the stone surfaces offers particularly attractive scenes for photography enthusiasts. As you walk here, climb the narrow stairways or follow the course of the fortifications, you can sense how the city has transformed from a military outpost into a modern port. The smell of the sea carried by the wind, the distant sound of ship horns and the voices of children rising from the valley create a vivid atmosphere that contrasts with the stark stone architecture. Zagnos Tower and City Walls are a unique starting point for those who want to read Trabzon not only as a Black Sea town, but also as a frontier stronghold of empires, a trading stop and a cultural crossroads.
